Profile

The Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) ranks among the strongest research universities in Germany. The diverse range of subjects goes hand in hand with a unique interdisciplinary network: Scientists from the FAU frequently work together across faculties, especially in the eight main research areas: New materials and processes; optics and optical technologies; medical technology; electronics; data analytics and digital transformation; energy systems of the future; cultural values; religions and human rights; the world of work; medicine, life sciences and health.

What is more, the FAU is also home to several exceptional research projects that receive special funding from the Federal Government: including the Cluster of Excellence Advanced Materials (EAM), the Erlangen Graduate School in Advanced Optical Technologies (SAOT), the Leading-Edge Cluster Medical Valley as well as the International College for Humanities Research Fate, Freedom and Prognosis. Response strategies in East Asia and Europe.

FAU is well networked in the metropolitan region of Nuremberg. It benefits from outstanding cooperation with non-university research institutions in Erlangen and Nuremberg, such as the Max-Planck Institute for Physics of Light, both Fraunhofer Institutes IIS and IISB and the newly founded Helmholtz Institute Erlangen Nuremberg for Renewable Energies (HI ERN).

The FAU is divided into five faculties and offers more than 260 degree courses covering all areas of science: From law and economics to theology, humanities, and social sciences through to natural sciences, medicine and engineering.

The university provides its students, doctoral candidates and early career researchers with intensive professional supervision and support and facilitates very good research conditions. FAU students have access to a plethora of exchange and career opportunities. In addition to numerous university partnerships, FAU maintains a plethora of research cooperations worldwide. Some 50 degree courses have a decidedly international orientation.

In 2018, the FAU celebrated its 275th anniversary under the university motto “Knowledge in Motion”.
